Investment Advisors Registration

SEBI Investment Advisor Registration in Mumbai

Investment Advisor Registration with SEBI in Mumbai

An Investment Adviser is a professional individual or entity that provides advice on securities, mutual funds, stocks, bonds, portfolio planning, retirement planning, asset allocation and other investment products in return for a fee. The main role of an Investment Adviser is to help clients make informed financial decisions based on their income, financial goals, risk capacity and investment needs. In India, any person or business providing paid investment advisory services must obtain registration from SEBI under the SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013. This registration is important for individuals, fintech companies, wealth advisory firms, financial consultants, LLPs and companies operating in Mumbai.

Mumbai is India’s financial capital and home to stock market participants, investment firms, fintech startups, wealth managers, corporates, HNIs and professional investors. If any Mumbai-based person or entity provides paid investment advice, SEBI Investment Advisor Registration becomes necessary before starting advisory services. A SEBI Registered Investment Adviser has a fiduciary duty toward clients. This means the adviser must act in the best interest of the client, give suitable advice, avoid misleading claims and maintain complete transparency in fees, risks and conflicts of interest.

Who Needs Investment Advisor Registration in Mumbai?

Any individual, sole proprietor, partnership firm, LLP, company or body corporate in Mumbai that provides investment advice for a fee must apply for SEBI Investment Advisor Registration.

This applies to persons giving advice on:

  • Stocks and securities

  • Portfolio planning

  • Retirement planning

However, if a Chartered Accountant, lawyer, tax consultant, banker or insurance agent gives investment-related suggestions only as an incidental part of their main professional work, separate registration may not be required. But if such professional starts a separate paid advisory service, SEBI registration becomes mandatory.
