On the occasion of World Copyright Day 2025, the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks (O/o Copyright Registry) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, announced a major reform in India’s copyright registration system. This reform includes the launch of a new format for the Copyright Registration Certificate and reframe the online filing procedure to enhance transparency, efficiency, and security.

New Format for Copyright Registration Certificate

The newly introduced Copyright Registration Certificate format is part of an effort to standardize and modernize intellectual property documentation in India. The redesigned certificate aims to:

  • Improve visual and structural clarity,

  • Ensure consistency with international standards,

  • Reflect the legal authenticity of copyright ownership.

This move is expected to make the copyright certificate more user-friendly and acceptable in legal and commercial transactions, both within India and globally.

Rebuild Online Copyright Filing System

Copyright Registry has significantly reframed the online filing system for copyright registration. The enhanced digital platform introduces multi-factor authentication (MFA), including OTP-based login, making the process more secure for applicants.

Key Features of the Upgraded System:

  • OTP-based Login: Users will now need to verify their identity using a one-time password (OTP), enhancing protection against unauthorized access.

  • Enhanced Security Architecture: The implementation of MFA fortifies the system against potential cyber threats and fraud.

  • User-Friendly Interface: A redesigned filing portal will streamline form submissions and document uploads.

  • Transparent Processing: Real-time tracking of application status and digital acknowledgments aim to reduce applicant confusion and enhance trust.

Impact and Significance

These developments by Copyright Registry represent a significant leap forward in digital IP infrastructure in India. Here’s why this move matters:

  • Transparency in the Registration Process: By digitizing and securing the entire copyright registration workflow, applicants can now expect greater clarity and timely updates.

  • Improved Efficiency: Manual errors and procedural delays are expected to decrease, allowing creatives and businesses to obtain copyright protection faster.

  • Stronger IP Enforcement: With standardized certificates and verified filing credentials, enforcing copyright in courts and business dealings will be more effective.

Stakeholder Response

The creative industry, including authors, musicians, designers, developers, and legal professionals, has welcomed the announcement. This reform is seen as a proactive step in empowering IP holders and aligning India’s copyright ecosystem with global best practices.

Conclusion

By launching a new copyright certificate format and a more secure, transparent online filing system, the Copyright Registry has demonstrated its commitment to making intellectual property registration in India safer, faster, and more reliable. These changes not only benefit applicants but also support India’s ambition to become a global innovation and creative hub. As copyright protection becomes increasingly vital in the digital age, this initiative on World Copyright Day 2025 underscores India’s progressive approach to intellectual property rights.
